No matter how well we strive to take care of our vehicles, there are always things that can go wrong. One of these is our car engine overheating. This can happen at the most inconvenient times, but especially while we are in the middle of driving. If this happens to you, do not panic. This blog will go over what to do if your engine overheats and if you can or should continue to drive it once it has cooled.
If you notice your car engine is overheating, immediately turn on the heater. While this may seem strange, it keeps the engine from exerting extra energy that the air conditioner would call for. Next, find a safe place to pull over. Turn the vehicle off and locate some heavy-duty gloves, a rag, and some coolant. It should take roughly 15 minutes for your engine to cool down. Once this time has passed, carefully open the hood of the car. Slowly open the radiator cap with your gloves on and the towel held over the cap. From here, add the coolant. Coolant should also be added to the reservoir if there is one on the side of the radiator. Replace the cap and start your engine.

If the temperature gauge returns to normal once you start the car, you can continue driving. However, you should be driving toward a dealership service center or mechanic. If the temperature begins to rise again, you will want to pull over and call AAA, roadside assistance, or a tow truck. The vehicle is not safe to drive. If you are unable to take your vehicle to a mechanic that day, refrain from driving the vehicle any longer than necessary. The temperature gauge may have returned to normal, but there is still an internal issue that needs to be rectified. If you continue to drive your vehicle without having it looked at, the damage could get worse and more costly.
