If you are contemplating if the shocks and struts on your vehicle are going bad, this is most likely due to a few different factors. You have probably noticed the feel of your vehicle while driving at faster speeds is not the same. You may have even noticed some inconsistencies when you take turns or go over bumps in the road. Eventually, you start to think maybe the culprit are the shocks and struts. However, you are not sure. This blog will go over the signs that your shocks and struts are going bad and if it is safe to drive with bad shocks and struts.

Signs Your Shocks & Struts are Going Bad

When your shocks and struts start to go bad, you will experience instability on the highway. This is due to the faster speed and the control you have over the vehicle. The vehicle can sometimes feel like it is tipping to one side or the other. The most irritating symptom is when the tires begin to bounce with each pothole or bump in the road. When you drive at slower speeds, you may notice that the front of the vehicle dives forward when you brake. The rear of the vehicle may also squat back when accelerating. One of the last signs of bad shocks and struts are an uneven tread on the tires.

Can I Drive with Bad Shocks and Struts?

While you can technically drive with bad shocks and struts, it is not advised. This is mainly due to the safety issues that comes with bad shocks and struts. If you hit a bump in the road while going too fast, it may be difficult to maintain control of the wheel. As well, taking curves and turns will become more inconsistent. When the weather conditions are unfavorable, it can cause the stopping time on your vehicle to be increased. All of these safety issues will only get worse as the shocks and struts continue to deteriorate. It is best to schedule a time to get these parts replaced with your local mechanic or dealership service department.
